Srivijaya Empire This kingdom was ruled by malay emperors who had their seat on Sumatra near Palembang. On the Malay peninsula, Chaiya, near Surat Thani became during the 5th century AD the regional capital. The religion in this kingdom was Vajrayana Buddhism as early as the late 7th century AD. Dvaravati The name of this kingdom derives from the Sanskrit and means 'consisting of doors'. The empire was the first state structure on Thai soil which included a group of city states. This Mon kingdom existed mainly in central Thailand, around its capital of Nakhon Pathom between the 6th and the 11th century AD. The kingdom was oriented on Indian civilizations and played an important role of introducing Buddhism to the region. Haripunchai Another Mon Empire existed in the North around Lampang and Lamphun from 750 AD until it was taken by King Mengrai and the Lanna Kingdom 1292 AD. |
