King Naresuan _ A Warrior King After the death of his father in 1590 AD, Prince Naresuan ascended the throne with earning himself later credits to be awarded the title 'the Great'. The first big deed of him is another successful defence of Siam against the Burmese in 1591 AD. This attack was followed by another war in 1592 AD in which the son of King Nanda Bhueng, Prince Minchit Sra was killed by naresuan in direct combat on elephant back at Nong Sarai, Suphanburi province. The time had come that King Naresuan was not only defending his kingdom but expanding it. So, in 1593 AD, he first successfully attacked the Burmese provinces of Tenasserim and Tavoy which minimalised the opportunity of the Burmese king to attack Siam Then, in the same year he took many Cambodian provinces until the Cambodian king and his heirs fled and the kingdom was put under Siamese governorship. Two of the few unsuccessful campaigns of King Naresuan were in 1596 and respectively 1600 AD as he tried to take more Burmese provinces. King naresuan the Great still experienced that the second western power, the Spanish started trade with Ayuthaya. King Naresuan the Great died in 1605 AD after having done a lot for the kingdom but without that he had time to marry or father any children so his younger brother Ekatotsarot succeeded him. |
