King Trailok and his Successors

The innovations in the administration of King Trailok were mentioned on the previous page but his and his sons reigns were much more exciting.

In 1456 AD, Lannathai decided for another time to break the peace with Siam and occupied temporarily in 1462 AD Sukhothai. After that city had been won back by Trailok's armies, he decided to move his capital to Phitsanulok as the only conflicts seemed to be with the Lanna. So, this city in the north of the realm should be for 25 years between 1463 AD and Trailok's death in 1488 AD the capital of the empire.

In Trailok's time there was as well for the first time ever in the history of Siam a white elephant found and captured. These animals were so seldom that the king decided that only himself could have those animals in possession. Those elephants should play a rather tragic role later in the history of Siam.

The Lanna still did not rest and in 1474 AD, the Lanna King Tilok massacred all the members of the Ayuthaya embassy which caused another war. As after most bloody battles with a lot of losses on both sides no victor could be determined, both sides decided on a peace treaty. Ironically both leaders should also die in the period of not even one year difference in 1487 AD and respectively 1488 AD.

After the death of Trailok, his son who had taken care for 25 years governor of Ayuthaya, Borommaratcha III succeeded him. The capital was now moved back to Ayuthaya as it seemed that there would be not any threat from the Lanna in the North. After only three years of reign, Borommaratcha III died and his younger brother Prince Jutta ascended as king Ramathibodi II the throne.
