King Chakraphat and Queen Suryothai

After the death of King Worawongsa, Khun Pirentoratep did not intend at all to claim the throne for himself but helped to establish that the brother of the late King Chairacha returned from a temple where he had been monk for a long time and became King Chakraphat together with his wife Queen Suryothai. Khun Pirentoratep gained tho the position of the governor of Phitsanulok and so the second most powerful man in the empire.

As the Burmese King Tabinshweti had watched the whole turmoil around Ayuthaya's throne succession interested as a spectator he decided that it was the right moment to invade the kingdom without drawing too much attention. The Thais had usually expected the Burmese to come from the North and so they did not monitor it carefully enough that Tabinshweti chose that time another path, from the West over the Three Pagoda Pass near Kanchanaburi. So, the Thais got aware of the Burmese invasion as it was nearly too late, as the large Burmese army was already near the gates of their capital.

King Chakraphat and the new governor of Phitsanulok Pirentoratep prepared rapidly their armies and faced the Burmese at Don Chedi. The king tried to face his direct opponent the Burmese king and in the following combat between the two leaders he seemed to be on the upper hand. But then, as a too sudden movement of his war elephant brought him out of balance it was clear that he had never survived the battle.it followed the moment in that he too late realised that the young handsome looking man who forced his elephant forward to come to his support was his wife Suryothai. The queen had dressed up as man to support her husband on the battlefield but now as she tried to reach him and defend him against the Tabinshweti she was suddenly stopped by the Burmese king's frontline commander Phra Jao Phrae Tado Dhammaraja. This experienced war proven warrior was clearly a number too big for the rather elegant Thai queen. The Burmese afraid for his own king did not pay any attention who was trying to attack his king and so he went massively into Suryothai with brutal force, his elephant bring her elephant out of balance. As the back legs of her elephant broke under the raging power of their opponents, Suryothai was chopped off by heavy blows strode by the warrior that she faced in Phrae Tado until finally his lance had cut her whole body open from the forehead to her hips. As Phrae Tado saw the blood quirling out of the uniform of Suryothai he saw that he had slaughtered a woman and he felt ashamed. Much bigger even was the shock for King Chakraphat who recognised now in her dying moments his beloved wife. As the tears ran down his face, Tabisnhweti realised who had been that woman and he ordered in empathy with his Thai counterpart his troops to withdraw.

At the place of Queen Suryothai's death has been erected the temple Wat Sobsawan, two of her and King Chakraphat's sons were captured in following battles with King Tabinshweti. So, Ayuthaya had to agree on peace on terms of the Burmese, King Tabinshweti later got killed on his return to Burma.
